New Hair, New Country

Notice anything different? Aside from the obvious hair color alterations, I am currently in London for my studies. I figured I might as well try something completely out of my comfort zone since I'll be residing in a completely different environment for the next 4 months. 

As for what I'm wearing, I consider this one of my more casual outfits. The weather here is, in my opinion, absolute perfection: not too cold & not too hot. I'm definitely looking forward to experiencing London fashion and culture and I can't wait to incorporate their trends into my personal style. Wishing for Paradise

There's less than a month of summer vacation for me before I embark on another chapter in my life, so I've been trying to take advantage of all the shorts, bright colors, and open-toe shoes I own. I recently purchased these amazing shoes that I am obsessed with! I paired them with this lightweight, fluorescent top and crocheted shorts that I've had for quite a while. 

I feel like I always seem to incorporate some sort of crochet or lace piece into my ensembles, but I've found them to be trendier substitutes for basic, solid pieces. The crochet detailing adds texture and dimension, making it look like you put more effort into an outfit than you really did. Highlight of the Year

Black has been my color of choice for the past year or so, but this fluorescent yellow will always be dear to my heart. It holds residency at raves, but it isn't typically featured on a daily basis anywhere else. I love incorporating it into my outfits because the color itself is unexpected. It practically forces everyone's eyes to be on you, so I definitely feel a sense of confidence when wearing it. When attempting to wear fluorescents on a daily basis, I would say to try to stick with simple silhouettes and choose accessories that don't overpower your fluorescent piece.

Hot Tropic

This outfit practically screams, "I'm on vacation" or "I'm going on vacation". Nevertheless, do not be fooled, for I have the utmost privilege of working endlessly in retail this wondrous summer. But, hey, a girl can dream of palm trees and sipping coconut drinks in the tropics.

Blue is definitely my go-to color when I'm not adorning the hundreds of black clothing items in my closet. Regardless of the shade of blue, the color still complements my skin tone and highlights my tan brilliantly. Finding the color that you feel goes best with your skin tone may depend on whether you have warm or cool tones, but it's also dependent on trial-and-error. You can find thousands of factual articles that tell you this color goes best with this skin tone, etc., but if you don't like that color, then those articles are completely useless. Find a color that is consistent throughout your wardrobe that highlights your body and most importantly, makes you feel confident whenever it's on you. Dressin' Boho, Ridin' Solo

Boho has never been my forte, nor has it ever been repetitively incorporated into my personal style. However, I am working towards my fashion mantra in fearlessly establishing outfits outside of my comfort zone. 

I found that in order to cultivate the effortless, yet chic perfection of bohemian style, a neutral color palette, intricate patterns, and lightweight fabrications are all you need. Although this style is outside my comfort zone, I'll definitely be rocking this look more often, especially now that it's summer. The pants are absolutely comfortable and provide much more movement than jeans, while the crocheted top allows more breathability than your typical t-shirt. Incredulous

The time has arrived where, I, Melissa Carlay, am wearing head-to-toe color. The last time I recall color blocking to this extremity was when I was still in high school. I must admit that I lost a little confidence in my style when I entered college, but I'm slowly trying to revive my spontaneous and fearless outfits that truly represent my personal style. 

I absolutely love these jeans because of its striking color and its sateen finish that makes it comfortable to wear throughout the day. And let's not forget about this incredible muscle tee. Wearing it always reminds me to rock my outfit with confidence. The shirt is already bright and obnoxious (in the best way possible), so I might as well wear it with pride. Bag Lady

I've had this bag for a little over a year now and I still can't get over how perfect this shade of yellow is.   It's very unexpected and that's exactly why I fell in love with it. Although it's not your average black, white, or nude bag, it's still versatile with any outfit, as are any primary colors.

Misunderstood & Miscalculated

Skorts are perceived as "so circa 1980's", but it seems like the trend is starting to resurface, and I'm not complaining. With the scorching heat and unbearable humidity also resurfacing, skorts are a definite must-have of the season. They appear dressier than shorts and they have more coverage and movement than skirts. I added leather ankle boots and edgy jewelry to offset the femininity of my lace shirt and floral skort. 

Although I didn't really go anywhere spectacular in this outfit, I would add a leather jacket if I was going out at night or exchange the boots for some nude flats if I was running some errands throughout the day. I did, however, end up at a Panera with my very best friend, Joanna, who I'd like to thank for taking these amazing pictures for me. Stairway to Success

As cliché as it must always sound, you truly can never go wrong with a "little black dress". Finding the right LBD that is both aesthetically pleasing and flattering to your body type is the tricky part. The black lace-like overlay and the cinching at the waist on this dress completely sold me. Plus, it gave me an excuse to wear my ankle strap heels again, that matched perfectly!
